Which is safer?

These two look similar on paper — both US-rooted, both MiCAR-licensed in 2025 (Kraken via the Central Bank of Ireland, announced 2025-06-25; Coinbase via Luxembourg’s CSSF, announced 2025-06-20), and both saw their SEC cases dismissed with prejudice in early 2025. The differences live one layer down.

Proof of reserves: Kraken runs a quarterly auditor-assisted Merkle-tree program with per-client self-verification (~$21.5B of client assets verified in March 2025). Coinbase runs no Merkle-tree proof-of-reserves at all — it substitutes public-company assurance: an audited annual 10-K and quarterly reviews. Incident records: Kraken (founded 2011) has no platform-wide withdrawal halt documented in 36 months of public status history; its June 2024 zero-day bug (~$3M withdrawn by security researchers) was patched in 47 minutes with funds returned, and Australia’s court ordered AUD 8M over a margin product in December 2024. Coinbase’s recent record is heavier: a May 2025 insider data breach affecting 69,461 customers (bribed support contractors; no funds or passwords; estimated $180–400M cost per its SEC 8-K), an ~8-hour halt of trading and withdrawals during the 2026-05-07 AWS thermal event, ~3 hours of degraded service in the 2025-10-20 AWS outage, and a £3.5M UK FCA fine in July 2024.
